Understanding the Next Generation:
Navigating the World of Gen Alpha
As adults, we’ve witnessed the world evolve at an unprecedented pace, with each generation bringing its unique perspectives and challenges. Now, we find ourselves at the brink of a new era: the rise of Generation Alpha, the children born from 2010 onwards. In this blog series, we delve into what it means to be Gen Alpha and how we, as parents, grandparents and caregivers, can better understand and support them in their journey.
GEN ALPHA BLOG #1 – LANGUAGE and SLANG
This first blog explores the fascinating world of Gen Alpha’s language, providing insights with an aim to bridge the generation gap.
DIGITAL DIALECT
Gen Alpha’s language is deeply intertwined with technology. They represent the first cohort to grow up entirely in the digital age. From infancy, they’re surrounded by devices, apps, and online content. As they grow, they effortlessly integrate tech-related terms into their vocabulary, like “hashtag,” “emoji,” “GIF,” or “avatar.” For caregivers, understanding these terms is crucial for effective communication and bonding with Gen Alpha.
EMOJIS AS EXPRESSION
Emojis have become an integral part of Gen Alpha’s communication toolkit. These colourful symbols convey emotions, reactions, and nuances in ways that words alone sometimes can’t. There are however clear generational differences in the use of emojis. Adults tend to view them as visual symbols and overuse them at the end of sentences – guilty as charged! Whereas Gen Alpha use emojis as a separate language, with the use and interpretation constantly morphing to reflect the latest trends.
SLANG EVOLUTION
Just as previous generations had their slang, Gen Alpha has coined its own glossary, often influenced by pop culture, social media, and online communities. Terms like “delulu” (describing people with unrealistic expectations), “pushing 🅿️” (something positive), or “w” (to be a winner) are commonplace in their conversations. Familiarizing ourselves with these slang terms can foster better understanding and connection with Gen Alpha.
ACRONYMS AND ABBREVIATIONS
Gen Alpha is fluent in the language of acronyms and abbreviations, thanks to text messaging and social media platforms. Phrases like “2M2H” (too much to handle), “BSF” (best friend, evolved from BFF), or “BRB” (be right back) are second nature to them.
THE ROLE OF INFLUENCERS
Social media influencers play a significant role in shaping Gen Alpha’s language and slang. They emulate their favourite influencers’ speech patterns, catchphrases, and mannerisms, incorporating them into their own communication style. For parents and grandparents, staying attuned to the influencers relevant to Gen Alpha can provide insights into their language preferences and cultural references.
Understanding Gen Alpha’s language and slang isn’t just about deciphering words; it’s about connecting with them on a deeper level and strengthening relationships. However, there’s a fine line between being a cool or ‘cringe’ parent. It’s important to be able to interpret the code, but the lingo is somewhat ‘age-stamped’. Kids are likely to feel embarrassed and/or find it hilarious if we start dropping their slang into conversations. Perhaps, connect by asking your kids to quiz you about their language or simply query the meanings in a joking manner. Either way, it’s a way of bonding and that’s a big parenting win!
